Sterile stratagems of Turki Al-Faisal,
Prince Turki Al-Faisal is depressed, desperate and frustrated. His different public overtures towards Israeli personalities in public foras organized in Europe and elsewhere for over a yeat did not bear fruit: being with a former Israeli official on the same panel here, or shaking hands in front of the cameras with a an Israeli ex-official there, or even writing articles blaming Hamas for the war waged by Israel on Gaza (i.e. in a recent article published in the daily Asharq al-Awasat that was shocking to the Saudi government and public), all of these attempts of rapprochement with the Israelis and their American supporters did not impress the Saudi officials, who- rather- look at them as miserable and pathetic.
In the influential power circles in Riyadh, senior official- starting with King Abdullah- perceive these gestures- although embarrassing to Saudi Arabia- as a last resort for Price Turki to secure a senior official post in the Saudi government. One senior official commented the erratic movements of Prince Turki by saying that after having been firmly and systematically ruled out from any senior or even semi-senior official position in the Saudi government, Turki is trying now to impress the Americans with what he thinks as bold signs of goodwill towards Israel, hoping that the Americans will impose him on his on the inner power circle in his country. This senior official derided his half cousin by saying: Turki can hope to get a post as long as a sterile seventy years old lady can hope to get pregnant, provided that she does not get impregnated by an Israeli.
Regarding his frequent speeches, lectures, and participation in foras and seminars around the world, another Saudi official, well connected with the upper stratus of power, commented: the only way to overcome his depression after having been sacked from his post as Ambassador in Washington a few years ago is to travel all the time and insinuate that he is still an important personality in Saudi Arabia. He often asks through intermediaries to be invited to conferences, seminars and workshops, to give the impression- back home- that he is influential and well sought by key political and intellectual circles, especially in the U.S. and Europe. The same personality adds: He did not fall from grace, but he does not count; Turki does not understand that his performance as intelligence chief over 25 years was mediocre; the King thinks so, his uncles and senior cousins think so and the Americans believe so, not to mention his poor performance when he was posted as Ambassador to Washington, attributing his failure to achieve in the year or so he was Ambassador to the imagined interventions of his cousin Prince Bandar bin Sultan, who was ill at the time (between 2005 and 2008). Therefore, the same personality adds, I will be not surprised in the coming weeks or months to see that Turki espouses obnoxious arguments held hard Likoudists in his articles and interventions. The same personality concludes: Turki should know that this is hopeless, and damaging for Saudi Arabia in the short and long run .. if he persists in this shameful path, he should join Dhahlan in Abu Dhabi
